This word comes from Arabic to Persian (بلاء). The plural balaayaa بلایا is also used in Persian (formal context). It’s worth mentioning that balaa بَلا is different from the prefix belaa- بِلا meaning ‘without’ which we talked about before (example: belaa-faasele بِلافاصله ‘immediately’).
